Hello Reader,

For years, I’ve heard the urban legend that a certain holiday 💝 was conjured up by a greeting card company just to peddle overpriced photos of cute little gophers dressed as Cupid 💘 printed on folded cardboard. 📩

But the truth is, that’s a myth. It isn’t true (well, the gophers on cardboard thing is).

And remember when your parents, or grandparents, or maybe even that grumpy 5th-grade sub, Miss Hickey, told you to do something you didn’t feel like doing? If you rolled your eyes, and admit it, sometimes you did, they gave you “the look” 🤨 and accused you of being lazy, a slacker, a shirker, or even a goldbricker (whatever that is).

[Hey, don’t be miffed; they thought they were doing you a favor; they did it with good intent… (well, except maybe Miss Hickey—she was just being cranky.) 😒]

But that label of being lazy may have subconsciously stuck with you, 🫤 a slight haunt crouched in the dark corners of your mind; 🕶️ the thought that you’d be compared to a lifeless lump, a slouch, a ne’er do well, 👨‍⚖️ and the worst indictment of all: a couch potato. 🛋️🍟🫨

Sure, at one time or another, we’ve all felt a tinge of guilt over feeling “lazy.”

Nobody’s proud of that.

But here’s some enlightenment that sets the record straight and restores your good name:

Just like the idea of fake holidays or the notion that French fries are actually…French,

Laziness is a Myth, It’s Not Real. 😮

That’s right. The concept of laziness is a social construct that simply does not exist.

Yeah, I said it.

Here’s the thing:

I don’t believe in Laziness. Not for a second.

But I do believe in being Unmotivated.

And that, my friend, is an entirely different ball game.

If you’re beating yourself up for not jumping out of bed like a world conqueror every morning, let me reassure you—it’s not because you’re lazy.

Let’s talk about what’s really going on.

The Real Deal: Motivation 🎯

For many people, motivation isn’t like a birthmark or a tattoo—it doesn’t necessarily stick around 24/7. Motivation comes and goes, ebbs and flows, based on… well, a whole bunch of things.

Ever notice how you can go from “meh” to “let’s do this!” when something exciting is on the line?

For example, on a soul-sucking Friday, when the hour finally strikes 5 PM, motivation kicks in, and in a flash,⚡you transform from lethargic clock-watcher into legendary shaker and mover. Once your weekend officially starts, your get-up-and-go is miraculously supercharged. 🧨🪂 If you bottled that enthusiasm, you could be CEO of your own start-up by 9 AM on Monday. 🕘🤸‍♀️

It’s a great feeling riding that wave, and we’ve all been there.

But we’ve also had days when it seems that nothing motivates us, times when we have to push ourselves to do the things that need to be done.

So, what’s up with that?

How do we keep that motivation engine purring?

Here are some factors that put you in a state of sweet motivation:

1. Doing What Makes Your Heart Sing🎶

Trying to motivate yourself when all you do is stuff that drains you emotionally is like trying to light a candle in a drizzle. 🔥 Whether it’s a passion project, a fun hobby, or just something exciting on the horizon, your motivation engine kicks into gear when you do (or anticipate doing) things that fill you with joy. So, crank up that heart-happy activity and keep the good energy vibe flowing! 💖♒

2. Working At A Job That Makes Your Heart Sing (On-Key)🎤

I get it—sometimes you spend the 9 to 5 🏢 nagged by the feeling that you’re not doing your heart’s calling, or maybe you’re in a profession that you love, but you would be happier in a different work environment. ⛈️ Sure, the obvious answer is to find a new gig, but we all know that doesn’t always happen overnight. So, what do you do in the meantime? Try a shift in mindset. 🤔

Enter: Gratitude. 🫡🔮

Sure, you’re not thrilled with the current situation, but think: would a zero $0.00 paycheck be better? 😬 Suddenly, having rent money feels pretty sweet! Think of it this way: “I am grateful that this job is paying my bills while I’m working toward making my dream gig happen.” 🌟

3. Your Diet (Yep, Food Matters)🍔🥦

Fueling your brain with junk food is like trying to power a rocket with marshmallows—not ideal! 🧁🚀 One night of donuts for supper might be fine, but keep stacking that junk and watch your motivation fizzle. 👎

When you treat your body like a garbage can, your brain 🤯 has to find a superhero cape 🦸 and work overtime to keep things running smoothly. Soon, even your favorite things will leave you feeling as excited as a soggy sock! 😩

The same goes for scarfing down foods that your body just can’t handle. If you’re feeling more “meh” than motivated, it might be a sign of sneaky food intolerances or sensitivities creating a drag on your system. ⛓️‍💥

That super chili cheese dog loaded with extra mustard, relish, and jalapeños? Yeah, it could be gunking up the skunkworks! 🌭💥

Want motivation? Ditch a lot of the foods with questionable ingredients, fuel up smart, and see what happens! 🥦💪

Pro Tip: Next time you feel motivated and full of energy, think back to what you ate or drank (or didn’t eat or drink) over the past 48 to 72 hours. You might spot a pattern.

4. Lack of Quality Sleep😴

We all know how we feel when we don’t get enough Zzzs, 🥴 but did you know that too much alcohol can block REM sleep? 😱 That’s the dream stage 🎭 where your brain processes emotions.

No REM means waking up like a grumpy Mayan warrior, even after 8 hours of shut-eye. 🫣 Couple that with some processed food or overindulgence, and it’s no wonder you feel like a “blob of zombie”! 😵‍💫🧟‍♀️

Okay, summing up!

Motivation—that rush of excitement, that buzzing anticipation, that blissful feeling of being totally alive—it’s the secret sauce that keeps our hearts singing out like a mellow voice at karaoke night! 🎤💃✨

So next time you catch yourself thinking, “Ugh, I’m so LAZY,”

Stop. Right. There.

It’s not [the concept ↩️ previously known as] LAZINESS—it’s simply a mix of factors that are draining your motivation.

Whether it’s poor diet, lack of quality sleep, or not doing what excites you, recognizing these motivation-killers can help you get back on track.

So, let’s ditch the lazy label and give ourselves some grace, okay?

That goes for you, too, Miss Hickey! 👺

You’ve got this!🙌
