This is a good book to help teens acquire the required social skills they need to excel and navigate this complex social world. As a parent of a teenager, I understand first hand what this can mean for a teenager. It looks at ways to understand emotional intelligence in friendships to the art of conversation; which truly is an art, navigating love and crushes, bullying etc. It is well broken down into manageable chunks. It has practical scenarios to aid with putting learning into practice. It defines social anxiety and provides techniques and skills to manage it. I love that it uses pictures to convey the messages. It is filled with practical scenarios which will help any teenager understand this very complex world. I highly recommend this book.

I bought this book for my teen and also so that I could get some ideas about parenting for this age group and understanding the challenges they face. I wasn't sure how well she was going to respond to this kind of advice type book, but as it turned out she got a few pointers out of it, and I definitely learned some useful stuff. I like the fact that the author is a coach who has clearly worked with young people and has real-life experience. She has a very humorous, straight-forward way of writing and there are lots of examples and case studies throughout which bring her chapters to life. A lot of ground is covered here, from understanding emotional intelligence, to basic communication skills, to navigating friendships and early relationships to negotiating life online - and in fact some of the ideas are pretty sophisticated. But it is all is delivered in a way that is easy to understand, with easy exercises that people can practice at home. One of the chapters I particularly found helpful was the one on the fabric of friendship. The author really does a deep dive here and even includes a checklist on what makes someone a good (and not-so-good) friend, along with how to make friends, how to fix friendship problems, and the natural ways in which friendships shift over time. This is SO HELPFUL, in my opinion especially for neurodiverse teens and indeed anyone who struggle with friendships, and I haven't seen a book that covers this topic in exactly this way before. All in all a really nice book, well structured, written in a friendly way, very accessible and full of useful tips and advice. Recommended.
